The rapid advancement of science and technology has resulted in the gradual development of 3D printing technology. We can create a wide variety of items using 3D printing, and any complex shape design can be realized using this technology, which has provided us with numerous advantages. What exactly is the operation of a 3D printer? Let's take a closer look at this.

What is the procedure for using a 3D printer?
3D printing, also known as prototyping, is a new type of manufacturing technology that builds solid objects layer by layer by stacking materials on top of one another. Despite the fact that there are numerous different 3D printing technologies available on the market, regardless of whether the final part is a rapid prototype or a functional part, the general 3D printing principle is the same and will remain the same in the future.

In order to produce 3D printed parts, a series of standard processes must be followed from the beginning CAD design to the end result.
1. The development of modeling software
In the entire process of 3D printing, it is the first step in converting an object into a digital model. The most common method of converting a physical model into a digital model is through the use of computer-aided design software (CAD). Three-dimensional (3D) printing is compatible with a wide range of CAD programs, both free and paid for. Reverse engineering can also be used to convert 3D scans into digital models, as shown in the following example.

2. STL file conversion and use in other applications
In contrast to traditional manufacturing methods, the conversion of digital model files into STL (stereolithography) files is the most important step in the entire process of 3D printing. Triangular polygons (triangles) are used to represent the three-dimensional parameter information of an object in STL. Before converting the model to an STL file, it is important to consider the model's limitations, which include its physical size, water tightness, and number of polygons.

If it is converted to an STL file, the file will be exported to the slicing software for further processing and manipulation. Using this program, you can convert STL files to Gcode. Gcode is a numerical control programming language that is used for numerical control. Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is a technique for manipulating automated machine tools (such as CNC machine tools and 3D printers) using computer software. Designers can also customize the construction parameters, such as the support, layer height, and part orientation, using the slicer program.

3. The process of 3D printing
Because 3D printers are generally comprised of a large number of small and complex parts, proper maintenance and calibration are critical to ensuring that prints are as accurate as possible. During this section, the 3D printer's printing materials are also loaded into it. The raw materials used in 3D printing have a limited shelf life and must be handled with care to ensure that they do not degrade. However, even though we can recycle excess 3D printing materials in some processes, if they are not replaced on a regular basis, repeated use will result in material performance being compromised (for example, drawing due to moisture).

It is not necessary to monitor the operation of the 3D printer once it has been started printing. The 3D printer will operate in an automated manner, and it will generally only sound an alarm when the machine runs out of materials or when the software is experiencing difficulties.

4. Discontinue support for 3D printing.
It is possible to remove 3D printing model support from some 3D printing technologies by simply removing the printed model from the printing platform, which is possible with some 3D printing technologies. In the case of other, more industrialized 3D printing methods, removing the support requires a specialized workflow that involves accurately obtaining the printed model objects while also encapsulating them in construction materials or adhering them to the 3D printing platform, among other things. This type of method necessitates the use of complex disassembly procedures, skilled machine operators, safety equipment, and a tightly controlled environment to be effective and efficient.

5. Procedures to be followed after 3D printing
It is necessary to note that the post-processing procedure varies depending on the 3D printer technology; different technologies require different procedures. The curing of SLA 3D printing technology under ultraviolet light is required before model processing can begin. Metal parts must usually be stressed-relieved in an oven, whereas parts made with FDM technology can be processed manually immediately after printing. In addition to polishing, other post-processing techniques can be used to prepare the final 3D printed model. These techniques include high-pressure air cleaning, polishing, and coloring, among others.

What Type of Material Is Used by a 3D Printer?
All of the following materials are available:

Nylon – Resin – ABS – PLA (Polylactic Acid) – Gold and silver – Stainless steel – Ceramic – PET/PETG – Titanium – HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene)
